In theory, the Bison Xpress reversal expansion is live. Construction of the project on Northern Border Pipeline (NBPL) has been completed and placed in service, TC Energy (TRP) said on its 2Q26 earnings call, opening an extra 300 MMcf/d of egress capacity from the Bakken. However, Bison Pipeline has yet to flow any southbound volumes.
The Bison reversal is just one piece of the puzzle for Kinder Morgan’s (KMI) Wyoming Interstate Co. (WIC), which will own 300 MMcf/d of capacity across NBPL, Bison and the Fort Union Gas Gathering (FUGG) system in the Powder River Basin. WIC intends to move Bakken gas south through these systems and onto its Medicine Bow lateral. From there, supply can be transported south to Cheyenne, where it can access a number of US markets via the Rockies Express Pipeline.
East Daley Analytics has closely followed the multi-system project on TRP and KMI assets. The expansion necessitated that WIC acquire a series of leases across NBPL, Bison and FUGG, all approved by the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) in October 2024 alongside the Bison XPress certificate. NBPL and Bison filed notices on May 11 declaring their respective leased capacity abandoned to WIC, effective May 1.
However, WIC has not accepted the capacity. In a May 18 filing, WIC stated that its obligation to take the leases is contingent on operating a seamless path across all three systems, which it says hasn’t been met yet because Bison is not currently authorized to deliver gas into FUGG. WIC noted it has no ability to compel Bison or FUGG to resolve this issue, leaving the completed project in limbo.
See East Daley’s Bakken Supply & Demand report for more detail. Though not directly related, WIC has also filed a new application to lease 50 MMcf/d of capacity on the FUGG system to move gas from the new Cutter processing plant in the Powder River to the same WIC interconnect. Once WIC acquires the necessary leases associated with the Bison reversal, it will be able to flow an additional 350 MMcf/d on its Medicine Bow lateral and increase the supply available at the Cheyenne hub. – Ian Heming Tickers: KMI, TRP.
